A signature with a transparent background drops cleanly onto any PDF, Word document, or Google Doc — no white box covering the signature line. Here's the fastest way to make one, plus two DIY methods if you want to digitise your existing paper signature.
The free GoodSign signature maker does exactly one job: it produces a clean, transparent, tightly-cropped PNG of your signature.
That's it. No account, no watermark, no email capture. The tool runs entirely in your browser — your signature never touches a server, which matters for something as sensitive as your legal mark. The download is automatically cropped to the ink with a transparent background, so it's ready to place the moment it lands in your downloads folder.
Tip: if you're drawing, do it on your phone — sign with your finger and the result looks far more natural than a mouse scrawl. Then email or AirDrop the PNG to yourself.
If you want your actual pen signature, sign on paper and digitise it:
Photo + background removal. Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper, photograph it straight-on in good light, then remove the background. Free options: remove.bg handles signatures reasonably well, or in PowerPoint insert the photo and use Picture Format → Remove Background. Export as PNG. Watch for two failure modes: shadows creating grey smudges around the ink, and thin pen strokes vanishing when the background is stripped.
Scanner + threshold. A flatbed scan at 300dpi gives a cleaner starting point than a photo. Open the scan in any editor with a threshold or "levels" control, crush the background to pure white and the ink to pure black, select the white with a magic-wand tool, delete it, export PNG. This is the highest-quality result — and the most steps.
Both routes take 10–20 minutes to get right. Honestly, unless you're deeply attached to your exact pen signature, the drawn or typed version from the maker is indistinguishable in real documents and takes a minute.
Once you have the file: Word documents (Insert → Pictures, wrap "In Front of Text"), Google Docs (Insert → Image, "In front of text"), PDF editors (image or stamp tool), and email signatures.
One boundary worth knowing: a signature image is fine for letters and everyday forms, but it carries no proof of who placed it or when. For contracts and agreements, use a platform that records an audit trail — sending a document for signature with GoodSign costs $1.50, needs no subscription, and the person signing draws or types their signature right in the browser with full legal standing.
Make the PNG once, keep it somewhere findable, and every "please sign and return" email for the rest of your life gets ten seconds shorter.
